If you are tiling an area that is not in a bathroom tiles can be applied directly to the sheetrock simply and easily.
Plasterboard should be waterproofed with barrierflex or aba superflex before tiling.
Tiling over plasterboard involves adhering tiles to a paper surface and although this will present little problem in dry areas if the wallboard is subjected to moisture it may deteriorate causing failure.
Afaik there s a weight limit for tiles directly onto plasterboard 32kg m2 i think which is better than skimmed plasterboard but imo if its anywhere near a wet zone you should use a more suitable cement board like hardibacker board.
If newly installed plasterboard you should be fine to tile directly onto it some people like to have it skimmed prior but i ve seen many trades tile directly onto the board.
Preparation for tiling onto plasterboard plasterboard should be dry securely fixed and rigid with no protruding fixings with the face to receive decorative finishes exposed.

It should be a minimum 12 5mm thick when fixed to timber framing or battening and fixed in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.
